Everyone loves an extended family photo but planning and how to prepare for your extended family session can feel daunting. But it doesn’t have to be if you know what to look for. Choosing a location and coordinating outfits doesn’t have to stop you from booking a photo shoot. A few tips can help you prepare for your extended family session.

Background: The first thing to consider is what the background looks like. You don’t want it to be overly busy. Something clean is always best. Ensure there isn’t a lot of trash or eye sores, such as poles, traffic signs, etc., in the area.

Open shade: You should also look for a location with open shade. Open shade refers to areas shaded from direct sunlight but still receive indirect light, such as under a tree or a building’s overhang. You will most likely be squinting if you are in full sun for your portraits.

Matching: With extended family, make sure everyone’s outfits coordinate. For example, you could choose a color scheme and have everyone wear different shades of those colors. Avoid outfits that blend into the background. You don’t want it to look too busy and have too many colors and patterns.

A large family photo shoot typically lasts an hour to an hour and a half. The season you choose will determine the time of your photo session. Depending on your family’s size, make sure your location has enough space for everyone.

Communication is key. Discuss the location, attire, and arrival time with everyone involved. Punctuality is crucial for a successful photo session. Remember, being late can affect the number of photos you receive. Give everyone enough time to get ready, and you’ll be well-prepared for a memorable family photo session.
