School picture day is here again — and let’s be honest, it’s one of those mornings that can either go super smooth… or totally sideways. Between picking the perfect outfit, taming that messy hair, and trying to get that cereal milk stain out of their shirt (it happens every year!), getting your child ready for school photos can feel like a rollercoaster.

But don’t worry, friend — I’ve got you covered! After years of photographing little ones, I’ve picked up a few tried-and-true tips that will make picture day a whole lot easier and stress-free (and help your kiddo look their absolute best).

So grab your coffee and let’s dive into my 5 best tips to prepare your child for school photos — that’ll make you and your child’s day fun and easy!

1. Start with a Fresh Face (and a Big Smile!)

First things first — a clean, happy face makes all the difference. Before heading out the door, make sure your little one’s face and eyes are washed and their teeth are brushed. (Because no one wants to discover leftover toothpaste or last night’s dinner in their school pictures — trust me, it happens!)

If your child tends to have dry lips, go ahead and tuck a little Chapstick in their backpack or pocket. Chapped lips can be very noticeable in photos, and a quick swipe before their picture is taken can make a big difference.

And while we’re on the topic of smiles — encourage your child to practice theirs! Have them give you their best grin in the mirror that morning. Even making them do some silly face first before they practice their picture-perfect smile can help them relax and feel more confident when it’s photo time.

2. Tame That Hair

Moms, make sure you take a few extra minutes to neatly comb or style your child’s hair before they head off to school. Because we’ve all seen the “I just rolled out of bed” look in a school yearbook, and we want to try to avoid that.

If your little one has stubborn flyaways or frizz that just won’t behave, add a bit of water, detangler, or a dab of hair product to their hair. It can do wonders. And if your child has bangs, make sure they’re not covering their eyes — we want to see those sweet faces!

Pro tip: Avoid trying a brand-new hairstyle on picture day. Go with something that feels natural and comfortable for your child, so they feel like themselves in their photos.

3. Keep Outfits Simple, Neat, and Season-Appropriate

Choosing the right outfit can make or break your school picture. I always recommend keeping clothing simple and timeless. Avoid dressing them in bright, bold, or neon colors that can distract from your child’s face — those colors tend to “steal the show” in photos.

Instead, go for solid, softer tones or small patterns that complement their skin tone and eye color. Think: cozy fall sweaters, crisp collared shirts, or sweet dresses that feel like them. If you have teenage daughters and they are struggling to find the perfect outfit, check out Holly Cove Boutique for some cute clothes.

Make sure their clothes are ironed the night before and that they are stain-free! You’d be surprised how easily a wrinkled collar or a tiny stain can stand out in a photo.

Lastly, dress according to the season! A sleeveless summer dress in November or a heavy knit sweater in April will look out of place — and we want these memories to feel true to the moment.

4. Build Up the Excitement!

Make picture day fun! It doesn’t have to be stressful. Talk about how exciting it is that they get to have their photo taken, and that these pictures are something you’ll both look back on for years to come and cherish.

Kids thrive off of positive energy, so if you’re excited and positive, they’ll be too. Tell them how proud you are and how much you can’t wait to see that beautiful smile of theirs. A confident, happy kid always photographs best!

5. Pack the Essentials (Just in Case!)

Even with all the preparing, life happens! Pop a little “photo day kit” into their backpack — a small hairbrush or comb, a chapstick, and maybe a tissue for last-minute touch-ups. Teachers are usually happy to help them with quick fixes before the photographer calls their name.

And you’re done! A few small steps can go a long way in helping your child feel prepared, confident, and picture-ready.

Final Thoughts on School Photos

School picture day is more than just a photo — it’s a memory captured in time. These images capture your child exactly as they are right now — missing teeth, giggles, and all. So take a deep breath, kiss that sweet face, and know that even if their hair goes a little wild or their smile turns out extra goofy, those are the moments that make these photos so special!

Because someday, you’ll look back at that picture and think, “That was so them.”
