Pregnancy is such a beautiful and meaningful season. It’s a time filled with anticipation, excitement, and quiet moments where you begin imagining the little life you’re about to meet.

For many moms, maternity photos are the first step in documenting their baby’s story. And if this is your first session, it’s completely normal to wonder what to expect at your maternity session. My heart for maternity photography is simple: I want your session to feel relaxed, joyful, and so you can remember this season exactly as it felt.

Here’s a little look at what to expect at your maternity session with Mary Wiebe Photography.

Planning Your Maternity Session

One of the first things we’ll do together is plan the details of your session. This helps everything feel effortless when the day arrives, and will often relieve you of any stress you may be feeling concerning your maternity session.

We’ll talk through things like choosing the perfect location, what to wear for your maternity photos, whether your spouse and children will join, and the overall feeling you want your photos to have.

My goal is to make the planning process simple and stress-free so you can focus on enjoying this special season.

When Maternity Sessions Are Scheduled

One of the most common questions moms ask when researching what to expect at your maternity session is when the session should take place.

Most maternity sessions are scheduled between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. For more details on when to book your session, check out the blog post on just that!

At this point, your baby bump is beautifully visible and you are still comfortable enough to move around well. The reality of meeting your little one is really starting to set it!!

Timing your session during this window helps create those glowing maternity portraits you’ll love forever.

A Relaxed and Guided Experience

If you’re feeling a little nervous about being in front of the camera, I promise you’re not alone. Many moms tell me something like this at the beginning of their session:

“I’m so awkward in photos.”

But the good news is—you don’t have to know what to do. One of the most important things to know about what to expect at your maternity session is that I guide you the entire time.

I’ll help you with:

  • Natural posing
  • Where to place your hands
  • Gentle movement
  • Prompts that create genuine connection

Instead of stiff poses, your session will feel natural and relaxed, allowing real emotion and joy to shine through. No need to be stressed about not knowing how to pose because that is my job as your photographer.

Celebrating the Beauty of Motherhood

Your maternity session is about so much more than just documenting your baby bump. It’s about capturing this moment in your life when everything is about to change in the most beautiful way.

During your session, we’ll capture a variety of moments. Including soft portraits of just you and your baby bump, loving moments with your spouse, and interaction with your children if they are joining. These photographs become part of your family’s story; the beginning of a new chapter.

Including Your Family

Many moms wonder if they should bring their spouse or children along. The answer is almost always yes.

Your maternity session can be a beautiful time to capture your whole family as you prepare to welcome a new baby. Children often snuggle with mom, hug your baby bump, and laugh and play naturally. This adds such a warming beauty to your photos.

We usually start with family moments and then finish with a few quiet portraits of just mom and baby.

Natural Movement Creates Beautiful Images

One of the things clients are often surprised by when learning what to expect at your maternity session is how much movement is involved.

Rather than standing stiffly in one spot, we’ll incorporate simple movement like:

  • Walking together
  • Gentle twirls with your dress
  • Holding hands
  • Whispering to your baby
  • Snuggling close with your spouse

These are the small moments that create the kind of emotional images that families treasure most. Check out my Pinterest here for more inspo on the way movement can create beautiful images!

The Beauty of Golden Hour

Most maternity sessions are scheduled in the evening during golden hour, the hour just before sunset when the light is soft and warm. Here in West Texas, golden hour can truly be captured with the open spaces and fields.

It’s one of the reasons maternity photos feel so timeless and magical. The glow of the sun shines through the trees, on the faces of those we cherrish and is a reminder of the beauty that God has created.

Why Maternity Photos Matter

Pregnancy can sometimes feel long while you’re living it. But when you look back, it becomes one of the shortest seasons of life.

Taking maternity photos allows you to preserve:

  • The anticipation
  • The excitement
  • The quiet love you already feel for your baby

Years from now, these images will remind you exactly how it felt to be waiting for your little one.
