Hey friends, let’s talk about what happens after your photos are delivered, something that doesn’t seem to get brought up enough. You’ve had your session, your gallery is finished, and now you’ve got those gorgeous images sitting online… but here’s the thing: your photos deserve more than just to live in your email or stay on your phone. It is important to back up your photos. I cannot stress this enough.

I get it — life gets busy, you tell yourself you’ll deal with the gallery tomorrow, and then that turns into weeks, which turns into months. Before you know it, that link expires, or something happens to your phone, and those memories are gone. I’ve seen it happen more than once, and it always breaks my heart. These photos are part of your family’s story — the laughter, the tiny details, the joy on the people’s faces that you love— and they’re worth protecting.

So let’s talk about why downloading and backing up your photos (to more than one place!) matters so much.

I love being able to send you a beautiful, easy-to-use gallery where you can view and download your images — but that gallery isn’t meant to be long-term storage. Think of it as a delivery system, not a permanent home.

Technology changes, storage limits come and go, and even though I try to keep galleries up as long as I can, I can’t guarantee they’ll always be available. Once you receive your photos, take the time to download them to your computer (if you have one) and at least one other device. You never want to rely on a link for something as precious as your family memories, or more importantly, your wedding.

2. Phones Fail, Computers Crash

We’ve all been there — an iPad that suddenly stops working, a laptop that decides to die overnight and refuses to charge, or a hard drive that just won’t start up. Technology is amazing, but it’s definitely not perfect. That’s why having your images stored in multiple places is so important.
Here’s a simple rule: three backups are better than one. Download them to your phone or computer for easy access, save them on a flash drive or external hard drive, and for extra security, maybe even back them up to a cloud service like Google Drive or iCloud. That way, no matter what happens to one device, your photos are kept safely somewhere else.

3. Flash Drives Are Small But Mighty

Flash drives are one of the simplest ways to keep your photos safe — and they’re easy to store or share. I always recommend having a dedicated flash drive just for your photos. Make sure you label it, keep it in a safe place (away from heat or moisture), and consider updating it every few years as technology changes.

The best part? You don’t need the internet to view your galleries! You just plug it in and view your images anytime. It’s like having a tiny little photo vault in your hand.

4. You’ll Be So Glad You Did

Imagine years down the road, how sad it would be if your kids asked to see their baby photos or your wedding pictures and you didn’t have any saved to show them. When you have your photos safely backed up, you can actually find them. You won’t have to dig through old email links or wonder if they’re still on your old phone. You’ll have them right where they should be — ready to reminisce over, print, or share at any moment.
Those images become heirlooms, and taking a few minutes now to save them properly is one of the best gifts you can give your future self (and your family).

5. Peace of Mind is Priceless

There’s something so reassuring about knowing your memories are safe. Once you’ve taken a little time out of your day to download, organize, and back them up, you can relax knowing they’re protected no matter what happens. You’ve invested in these moments — and they deserve to be cared for just like any other treasure in your home.

So, when your gallery email comes in, don’t wait. Take a few minutes to download your photos, back them up to multiple places, and put a copy on a flash drive. It’s a small step that makes a huge difference in the future.

Because years from now, when you’re sitting with your kids or grandkids flipping through old photos, you’ll be so thankful you took the time to save them — not just on a screen, but somewhere they’ll always belong. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to download them properly.
