Engaged couple holding hands near a creek Should You Book an Engagement Session? 4 Reasons I Think You’ll Be Glad You Did!

If you’re newly engaged, first of all, congratulations! This is such an exciting season of life, and I hope you’re taking time to enjoy it between all the wedding planning, decisions, and to-do lists. One question I hear from couples is, “Do we really need to book an engagement session?”

My answer? I absolutely recommend one! And not just because I love taking pictures. When you book an engagement session, it gives us a chance to get to know each other, helps you feel more comfortable in front of my camera, and gives you beautiful photographs to remember this special season of your love story.

Recently, I photographed an engagement session at Mackenzie Park in Lubbock, Texas, and it was the perfect reminder of why I love these sessions so much. Let’s talk about why I think booking one is worth considering!

1. Get Comfortable in Front of the Camera

Let’s be honest. Most couples don’t spend their free time practicing how to pose for pictures! In fact, one of the first things I hear from couples is, “We’re so awkward in front of the camera!”

Friend, you are not alone! And guess what? You don’t have to know how to pose. That’s my job!

After you book an engagement session it gives you a chance to learn what it feels like to be photographed before your wedding day. I can guide you through poses, give you simple prompts, and help you interact naturally with each other. Instead of worrying about what to do with your hands or where to look, you can focus on the person you’re about to marry.

By the time your wedding day arrives, you’ll already know me, understand my approach, and have a better idea of what to expect. That little bit of familiarity can make a BIG difference when it’s time for your wedding portraits!

2. Get to Know Your Photographer Before the Wedding

Your wedding photographer is going to be around for some pretty important moments! From the excitement of getting ready to the emotional ceremony and all the fun on the dance floor, I want you to feel comfortable having me there to document it all.

That’s one of my favorite things about why you should book an engagement session. We get to spend time together without the wedding day timeline ticking away in the background.

During our session at Mackenzie Park in Lubbock, we had the opportunity to slow down, enjoy the experience, and capture the couple simply being together. Those little moments of laughter, closeness, and connection are what make your photographs feel personal.

As a wedding photographer, I want my couples to know they can trust me to guide them while still allowing their personalities to shine. When you book an engagement session, this helps build that relationship before one of the biggest days of your life!

3. Enjoy Beautiful Photos From This Season of Life

Your engagement is a chapter of your story that deserves to be remembered. Before long, you’ll be celebrating anniversaries, building a home together, and looking back on the excitement of planning your wedding.

Your engagement photographs preserve this particular season, just as it is right now.

And you can do so much with them! Use your images for save-the-dates, wedding invitations, your wedding website, a guest book, or prints to display at your reception. You can even choose a few of your favorites to frame in your home.

There are so many ways to make an engagement session feel personal. We can use the location’s open spaces, natural scenery, and beautiful light to create variety in your gallery without needing to visit a dozen different locations.

The goal isn’t to create pictures that look exactly like everyone else’s. It’s to create photographs that remind you of your relationship and the joy you share.

4. Learn What Works Best for Your Wedding Photos

Here’s a little secret from behind the camera: engagement sessions are helpful for photographers, too!

Every couple is different. Some are naturally playful and love laughing together, while others feel most comfortable with quiet, intimate moments. When you book an engagement session, I get to learn what makes you comfortable, how you two interact, and which kinds of prompts bring out your genuine personalities.

I can also see how you move together, what poses feel natural, and how to guide you without making the experience feel stiff or overly posed.

For photographers, this is a great opportunity to practice observing natural interactions rather than relying on the same poses for every couple. Pay attention to the little things: the way someone reaches for their partner’s hand, the laughter after a silly prompt, or the way they lean into each other without even thinking about it.

Those moments often become some of the most meaningful photographs in the gallery.

For couples, this means I have a better understanding of how to photograph your connection when the wedding day arrives. And for me, that is always the goal!

Wedding planning can get overwhelming. Between choosing vendors, managing a budget, and making a thousand little decisions, it’s easy to feel like every part of your engagement has become another task to complete.

Your engagement session doesn’t have to feel that way!

Think of it as a date with your favorite person, with photographs at the end. You can laugh, walk together, snuggle close, and enjoy being engaged without worrying about the next item on your wedding checklist.

I encourage my couples to plan something fun afterward, too. Grab dinner, get ice cream, or simply enjoy an evening together. You deserve to celebrate this season!
