A Lubbock Wedding Photographer’s Guide + 3 Tips for Planning Your Engagement Session

Engagement sessions are more than just a line item on your wedding checklist. They are an opportunity to slow down, connect, and capture the season before the wedding day arrives. As a Lubbock wedding photographer, I always encourage couples to choose locations that feel natural, meaningful, and true to who they are. Highwind of Amarillo Venue & Event Center is one of those locations that effortlessly offers all of that and more.

Located just outside Amarillo, this venue is known for its wide open land, peaceful surroundings, and classic West Texas charm. From the moment you arrive, there’s a sense of calm that settles in, and the space allows couples to simply be present together without distractions or pressure.

During a recent session at the venue, I was reminded how important preparation and flexibility are when planning engagement photos. Below are three essential tips to help you plan your engagement session, especially when choosing a venue like the Highwind of Amarillo.

1. Double-Check Location Access & Restrictions

Before heading out for your engagement session, it’s important to confirm access details and any restrictions with the venue. Even open, Palodra Canyon may have specific guidelines, event schedules, or time limitations that affect where photos can be taken. We had initially planned to take photos at Palodora Canyon, but due to hunting season, we could not. Double-checking saved the day!!

Instead of letting it cause stress, we pivoted to a nearby area with a similar look and feel; open land and neutral tones. Highwind of Amarillo Venue & Event Center was a beautiful location that fit in perfectly.

This flexibility allowed the session to remain calm and enjoyable, which always translates into better images. When couples trust their photographer and allow room for adjustments, the experience stays positive, and the photos reflect that ease.

2. Plan Outfits That Match the Vibe & Terrain

Outfit planning is about more than just style; it’s also about comfort and practicality. The landscape at this venue is natural and rustic, which means uneven ground, grass, and open terrain.

When choosing outfits, think about coordinating colors and textures that complement the West Texas scenery. Soft neutrals, earth tones, and timeless pieces photograph beautifully at the Highwind of Amarillo. Shoes are especially important! Heels on rough terrain can quickly become uncomfortable. If you love the look of heels, consider bringing a backup pair for walking between locations.

Weather is another factor to plan for. West Texas is known for wind and quick temperature changes. Checking the forecast and choosing breathable fabrics or layers will help you stay comfortable throughout your session, and comfort always leads to more natural expressions.

3. Consider Time of Day, Lighting & Natural Distractions

Lighting plays a huge role in how your engagement photos feel. One of the most beautiful times to photograph at Highwind of Amarillo is during golden hour, when the sun dips low and casts a warm, soft glow across the land.

When planning your session, think carefully about the time of day—not just for light, but also for what else may be happening around the property. Open land often comes with animal activity, wind, or unexpected distractions. Allowing extra time helps keep the session relaxed and unrushed, giving space for those moments without pressure.

Some of the most meaningful images come from in-between moments; walking together, laughing, pausing, or waiting. Planning with margin allows those moments to unfold naturally.

Why Highwind of Amarillo Is Perfect for Engagement Photos

This venue & event center offers couples a rare balance of openness and intimacy. It’s a venue that allows your love story to take center stage without overpowering it. Whether you’re planning your engagement session or envisioning your wedding day, the Highwind of Amarillo Venue & Event Center provides a timeless backdrop that feels peaceful, intentional, and deeply connected to the West Texas landscape.

As a Lubbock wedding photographer, my goal is always to help couples feel confident, comfortable, and fully present so their photos don’t just show what the day looked like, but preserve exactly how it felt. To start capturing your special moments, click the link below!
