Highwind of Amarillo Venue & Event Center turned out to be the perfect setting for this engagement session, even though it wasn’t our original plan. We had hoped to photograph these sweethearts at Palo Duro Canyon, but hunting season meant we needed to find another location. Thankfully, Highwind offered the open land, neutral tones, and peaceful West Texas setting we were looking for. It was a beautiful reminder that sometimes a change of plans can lead you somewhere even better. During this engagement session, I was reminded just how important preparation and flexibility are when planning engagement photos. Sometimes the original plan changes, and that’s okay. Having a photographer who can pivot without letting the change take over the experience makes all the difference.

1. Double-Check Location Access & Restrictions

Before choosing a location for your engagement photos, make sure you know whether there are any access restrictions, scheduled events, seasonal closures, or other limitations that could affect your session.

We had initially planned to take these photos at Palo Duro Canyon, but hunting season meant we couldn’t photograph there as planned. Thankfully, we had enough flexibility to pivot to another location with a similar look and feel.

Highwind of Amarillo Venue & Event Center ended up being a beautiful alternative, with open land, neutral tones, and plenty of space to photograph the couple naturally.

Double-checking location access ahead of time may seem like a small detail, but it can save a lot of stress on the day of your session. Outfit planning is about more than just style; it’s also about comfort and practicality. The landscape at this venue is natural and rustic, which means uneven ground, grass, and open terrain.

When choosing outfits, think about coordinating colors, textures, and movement that complement the West Texas scenery. Soft neutrals, earth tones, and timeless pieces photograph beautifully at Highwind of Amarillo. I also love outfits that move well because your engagement session won’t be a series of standing-and-smiling photos. We’ll walk, move, laugh, snuggle, and interact with each other.

Weather is another factor to plan for. West Texas is known for wind and quick temperature changes. Checking the forecast and choosing breathable fabrics or layers will help you stay comfortable throughout your session, and comfort always leads to more natural expressions.

Lighting plays a huge role in how your engagement photos feel. One of the most beautiful times to photograph at Highwind of Amarillo is during golden hour, when the sun dips low and casts a warm, soft glow across the land.

When planning your session, think carefully about the time of day, not just for light, but also for what else may be happening around the property. Open land also means we may encounter wind, animals, changing light, or other unexpected distractions. Instead of rushing through them, I like to leave room in the timeline so we can pause, adjust, and keep going without feeling pressured.

Some of the most meaningful images happen in the in-between moments: walking together, laughing, pausing, fixing a dress, or simply enjoying each other’s company. Planning with margin gives those moments room to happen naturally instead of rushing from one pose to the next.

What I loved about Highwind of Amarillo for this session was how easily it gave us the look we were hoping for without feeling forced. The open landscape, neutral tones, and West Texas surroundings created plenty of variety while still keeping the focus on the couple.

It’s the kind of setting where you can walk together, slow down, laugh, and interact naturally. There is room for wide scenic images as well as those closer, more intimate moments.

And that’s exactly what I want from an engagement session.
