There is something incredibly special about those first few weeks with your baby. Everything feels new. Their tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, little noises, and the way they fit so perfectly into your arms. A studio newborn session is about preserving those details before they change.

If you have never had newborn photos taken before, you may be wondering what you should bring, how to prepare your baby, or what actually happens during the session. The good news? You do not need to have everything perfectly planned.

As a newborn photographer, my goal is to create a calm, relaxed experience where you can slow down and simply enjoy your baby. These studio newborn session tips will help you know what to expect and feel prepared when you walk through the studio door.

When to Schedule Your Studio Newborn Session

The best time to book your studio newborn session is during your pregnancy. Newborn sessions are typically scheduled within the first couple of weeks after your baby arrives, when babies are still very sleepy and naturally curl into those sweet newborn positions.

I recommend reaching out during your pregnancy so we can reserve a spot on my calendar around your due date. Once your baby arrives, we will finalize the exact session date based on their arrival.

Babies do not always follow our plans, and that is completely okay. Your due date is simply a starting point. Once your little one is here, we will find the best time for your family.

One of my favorite newborn photographer tips is to give yourself permission to be flexible. The goal is not to create a perfectly scheduled day. The goal is to document your baby exactly as they are during this fleeting season.

Prepare Your Baby

You do not need to do anything complicated to prepare your baby for their session.

If possible, try to keep your baby awake for a little while before leaving for the studio. A bath, gentle interaction, or simply spending some time talking and cuddling with them can help.

Before heading to the studio, give your baby a good feeding. A full tummy often helps babies settle into a deeper, more comfortable sleep.

But if your baby falls asleep in the car or has a different plan for the morning, don’t stress. We will follow their lead once you arrive.

Newborn sessions are baby-led. We may stop for feeding, changing, cuddling, or soothing as often as needed. There is no expectation for your baby to sleep perfectly through the entire session.

And please do not worry if your baby is fussy. Fussiness is normal. Crying is normal. Feeding is normal. Needing to be held is normal.

This is real life with a newborn, and there is absolutely no need to apologize for it.

Bring the Essentials

One of the best studio newborn session tips I can give you is to keep your packing list simple.

You will want to bring:

  • Plenty of diapers
  • Wipes
  • A pacifier, if your baby uses one
  • Extra bottles or formula if bottle feeding
  • Anything your baby needs for feeding
  • A change of clothes for yourself
  • Any special sentimental items you would like photographed

You do not need to bring an entire nursery with you. My studio will have the blankets, wraps, and simple newborn accessories needed for your baby’s portraits.

If there is something meaningful you would love incorporated into the session, feel free to bring it. A special blanket, heirloom, stuffed animal, or small keepsake can add a beautiful personal touch to your images.

And don’t forget about yourself.

New parents often spend so much time preparing everything for their baby that they forget to prepare for themselves. Bring a water bottle, a snack, and anything else that will help you feel comfortable.

What to Expect During Your Studio Newborn Session

When you arrive, there is no need to rush.

We will take a few minutes to get settled, feed your baby if needed, and make sure everyone is comfortable before we begin.

Your studio newborn session will move at your baby’s pace. If your baby is sleeping peacefully, we will take advantage of that time. If they need to eat, we will pause. If they need to be held, we will cuddle them.

The session is not about forcing your baby into a pose or rushing through a checklist of images. It is about gently documenting this season of your family’s life. We will capture a mixture of beautiful newborn portraits, tiny details, and the connection between you and your baby. There may be moments where you simply hold your baby, look down at them, or breathe them in.

Those moments matter. Your baby’s tiny fingers will grow. Their little newborn stretches will disappear. The way they curl into your chest will change. This is why these images are so meaningful.

And if you have older children, don’t worry if they are not perfectly cooperative. They are new siblings navigating a huge change, too. We will give them space and keep things relaxed.

Relax

This may be the most important tip of all.

You do not have to make your newborn session perfect.

You do not need to know how to pose. You do not need to know what to do with your hands. You do not need to make your baby smile. You do not need to worry about whether your baby is crying.

You simply need to show up and love your baby.

I will guide you through the rest.

As a newborn photographer, part of my job is not only to photograph your baby but to create an environment where you feel comfortable and cared for. There is no pressure to perform for the camera. Instead, we will slow down and allow your family’s story to unfold naturally.

These photographs are not about creating a picture-perfect version of your newborn days. They are about remembering what this season actually felt like.
