Bringing your baby home is a season filled with so many emotions. You are soaking in those tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, little noises, and the way your baby fits perfectly in your arms. Before you know it, those first few weeks will be behind you.
A newborn session is about preserving those little details while they are still so new.
If you are wondering how to prepare, what your baby should wear, or what happens if your little one decides not to cooperate, take a deep breath. Here are 5 tips for a newborn session, and you do not need to have everything perfectly planned. As a newborn photographer, my goal is to create a calm, relaxed experience where you can simply enjoy your baby.

Tips for a Newborn Session!
1. When to Schedule Your Newborn Session
One of the best newborn photographer tips I can give you is to schedule your session before your baby arrives.
Newborn sessions are typically best within the first couple of weeks after birth. During this stage, babies tend to be sleepier and naturally curl into those sweet newborn positions. That said, there is no need to stress if your baby is a little older. Every baby is different, and beautiful images can be created at many stages.
When you book your newborn session, we will choose a tentative date based on your due date. Once your baby arrives, we can adjust the date if needed.
I recommend reaching out during your pregnancy rather than waiting until after your baby is born. Having your session planned ahead of time means one less thing to think about during those first exhausting and beautiful days at home.
And remember, your newborn session isn’t about getting the “perfect” baby. Your baby is already perfect exactly as they are.
2. Keep Outfits Simple and Comfortable
When choosing what to wear for your newborn session, think simple, neutral, and comfortable.
Soft colors and simple textures photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your family. Creams, whites, tans, soft browns, muted colors, and gentle patterns are all wonderful choices.
For baby, you don’t need to bring an entire wardrobe. A simple outfit, swaddle, or even just a diaper can be perfect. Your baby’s tiny hands, feet, rolls, and features are some of the sweetest details we want to remember. For parents and siblings, choose clothing that coordinates rather than matching exactly. Avoid loud graphics, neon colors, or very busy patterns that can distract from the people in the photograph.
Most importantly, choose something you feel comfortable in. These photos should feel like your family.

3. Feed Your Baby Before the Newborn Session
A well-fed baby is often a happy and sleepy baby, which can make the session much easier.
Plan to feed your baby shortly before we begin. If your baby gets hungry during the session, that is completely normal. We can stop whenever necessary for another feeding, a diaper change, or simply some extra cuddles.
There is no need to watch the clock or worry that we are “falling behind.”
Newborn sessions are baby-led. If your little one needs to eat, we feed them. If they need to be changed, we change them. If they need to be held for a few minutes, we pause for cuddles.
Your baby sets the pace.
This is one of the biggest differences between a newborn session and a traditional portrait session. We are not trying to rush through a list of poses. We are creating space for your baby to be exactly who they are.

4. Prepare for Your Newborn Session, But Don’t Overprepare
It can be tempting to pack everything you think you might possibly need. But you probably don’t need nearly as much as you think.
Bring the basics your baby normally needs: diapers, wipes, bottles or feeding supplies if needed, a pacifier if you use one, and anything else that helps keep your baby comfortable. If there is a special blanket, heirloom, stuffed animal, or meaningful item you would like included, bring it along. Those little details can make your photographs even more personal.
Before your session, try to keep the morning as calm as possible. Give yourself extra time to get ready and arrive without feeling rushed. And don’t worry if your baby doesn’t sleep the entire time.
Some babies sleep soundly. Some want to be awake and look around. Some need lots of breaks and cuddles. Some decide they would rather be held by Mom the entire session.
All of it is okay.
Your newborn session isn’t a test that your baby needs to pass.
5. Relax and Let Me Take Care of the Rest
This might be my most important tip.
Relax.
You do not need to know how to pose your baby. You don’t need to know what to do with your hands. You don’t need to make your baby smile. You don’t need to worry about whether your house is perfectly clean or whether you look like you just had a baby.
You just had a baby. You are allowed to show up exactly as you are.
My job as your newborn photographer is to guide you through the session and create images that feel natural and genuine. I will help with posing, positioning, and knowing where to stand. I will watch your baby and make adjustments as needed.
Some of my favorite newborn images aren’t the perfectly posed photographs. They are the moments in between. The way Dad looks down at his baby. Mom’s hand resting gently on that tiny back. A sibling leaning in for a kiss. Tiny fingers wrapped around yours.
Those are the moments you will want to remember. To see a similar post, click here.

Your Newborn Session Should Feel Like Your Family
The newborn stage can feel like it is moving at an impossible speed. One day you are counting down the weeks until your baby arrives, and suddenly you are holding them in your arms wondering how they could possibly already be growing so quickly.
Your newborn session gives you the opportunity to slow down for a little while.
You don’t have to perform for the camera. You don’t have to have everything together. You simply get to love your baby while I document this beautiful, fleeting season. If you are looking for newborn session tips, remember these five things: plan ahead, keep outfits simple, feed your baby, prepare the essentials, and most importantly, relax.
The rest can be taken care of when you arrive. And someday, when those tiny fingers aren’t so tiny anymore, you will be grateful you took the time to preserve these moments.
I hope sharing these 5 tips for your newborn session has been helpful. Staying relaxed is the biggest key in having a successful newborn session.
