Being in the right place at the right time for a surprise proposal is not something you can plan for. Sometimes you just happen to be exactly where you need to be when something incredibly special is about to happen.

That is exactly what happened to me this past weekend in Midland, Texas, and I am still coming down from the nerves!

I have always been a little jealous of photographers who happen to be in the right place at the right time and capture those completely unexpected moments. You know the ones I mean. A photographer is walking down the street, sitting at a coffee shop, or photographing something completely unrelated when suddenly, something beautiful happens right in front of their camera.

Well, this time, it happened to me.

And I loved every single second of it.

A Daughter’s Session and an Unexpected Question

I was in Midland for a session with my daughter. We were waiting for her boyfriend to arrive at the location when I heard someone asking a question about my photography.

I turned around, and there was a dad asking if I could photograph a proposal that was about to happen.

Right there.

On the sidewalk.

My first thought was probably something along the lines of, “Wait… what?!”

My second thought was, “Absolutely!”

And then the nerves kicked in.

I had no idea this was coming. I wasn’t there specifically to photograph a proposal. I didn’t have time to carefully scout the location, plan the angles, check the lighting, or think through exactly where I wanted everyone to stand.

I just had my camera in my hands and a few moments to figure it out.

And suddenly, this wasn’t just another photo opportunity.

This was someone’s proposal.

A moment they would hopefully remember for the rest of their lives.

The Nerves Before the Knee

My heart started racing almost immediately.

A hundred questions ran through my mind all at once.

What are my camera settings?

Where are they going to be standing?

Which direction are they walking?

Will I have the right angle?

Will the lighting be okay?

What if they move faster than I expect?

What if I miss the moment?

There is something about knowing that you only get one chance that makes everything feel a little more intense.

I watched the couple begin walking toward us, and I remember thinking, “Okay, Mary. You have this.”

At least, I was trying to convince myself that I had this.

We passed each other on the sidewalk, and I took a few steps forward, pretending I had absolutely no idea what was about to happen.

I’m pretty sure I had guilt written all over my face because I knew something she didn’t know.

And then I turned around.

One Knee, One Chance

There he was.

Sebastian was getting down on one knee.

This was it.

This was the moment.

Everything I had been worrying about just a few seconds earlier suddenly disappeared.

The second I lifted my camera to my face, my photographer brain took over.

I knew where to stand.

I knew what I needed to capture.

I knew to keep shooting.

The nerves were gone, and I was completely in the moment.

Click.

Click.

Click.

I watched Hailea realize what was happening, and I knew I was witnessing one of those moments that can never be recreated.

There would never be another first proposal.

There would never be another first reaction.

There would never be another moment exactly like this one.

And somehow, I got to be the person behind the camera to preserve it.

The Moment After “Yes”

And then came the best part.

She said yes!

Just like that, they were engaged.

The nervous energy of the proposal turned into excitement, smiles, hugs, and that wonderful feeling that comes when you realize your life is about to enter a brand-new season.

I loved being able to capture not only the moment Sebastian got down on one knee, but also those little moments immediately afterward.

The smiles.

The hugs.

The excitement.

The ring.

The way they looked at each other.

Those are the photographs that tell the whole story.

Because a proposal isn’t just about the moment someone gets down on one knee. It’s everything that happens in the seconds before and after it, too.

What an Honor

What an honor.

I have photographed a lot of important moments over the years, but there is something especially fun about being completely surprised by one.

It reminded me why I love having a camera in my hands in the first place.

You never really know what is going to happen.

Sometimes you just happen to be in the right place at the right time.

And sometimes, that is all it takes to capture something unforgettable.
