Every once in a while, an opportunity comes along that gives you the chance to step outside your normal routine, see somewhere completely new, meet talented photographers, and photograph in a setting that looks nothing like what you are used to. That is exactly what this Idaho adventure was for me.

I recently had the opportunity to attend a styled photography shoot hosted by three incredibly talented photographers, Cheri Chichizola Photography, Photos by Kelly Lynn, and Elephant Juice Photography.

And let me tell you, Idaho did not disappoint. Well… except for the flight.

The Adventure to Idaho | Family Photography in Idaho

Getting to Idaho took a little longer than expected. A few flight delays definitely added some extra hours to the adventure, but once I arrived, I knew the trip was going to be worth it.

I landed around noon, which gave me a little time to explore before heading out to the styled shoot.

One of the first things I did was drive around Boise and take in some of the city. Of course, I had to check out the Idaho State Capitol Building.

Yes, I got a little history lesson while I was there!

I love being able to explore a new place instead of simply arriving for a shoot and leaving again. There is something special about slowing down enough to notice the little things, take in the scenery, and experience a little bit of the local culture.

And then there was the food.

A Little Boise Food Adventure | From Family Photography in Idaho

Our first stop was Lemon Tree Co..

But one of my favorite places we ate was The Funky Taco.

You really cannot go wrong eating there! Good food, a new city, beautiful scenery, and a photography adventure? I was already having a pretty great day. But the best part of the trip was still ahead.

Into the Mountains for Family Photography in Idaho

After grabbing something to eat, we headed toward our shoot location. And this is where Idaho really started showing off. We made our way into the mountains and found a beautiful trail at the top. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking, but what really caught my attention as a photographer was the light.

The light filtering through the trees was soft, warm, and beautiful. It created the kind of natural light that photographers dream about when planning a family photography session.

There was something about the combination of the tall trees, mountain scenery, fresh air, and beautiful light that made the entire setting feel peaceful.

As someone who lives and photographs primarily in West Texas, I have to admit… Scenery like this makes me ask, Why do I live in West Texas again? Just kidding. Mostly. Enough about Texas. Let’s get back to Idaho.

A Beautiful Mountain Family Session

The family arrived ready for the shoot, and they were absolutely wonderful to photograph.

Dad and the boys came dressed and ready to go, while Laura brought along the beautiful skirt and dress for Mama and Sister to wear.

She even provided the earrings to complete the look.

One of my favorite details was Sister’s top.

Her mama actually made it specifically for this shoot, and it turned out beautifully. I love details like that because they add another layer of meaning to family photographs. It isn’t just an outfit. It becomes part of the story.

And that is one of the things I love most about family photography. The little details, the relationships, the personalities, the way a child holds onto Mom’s hand, the way Dad interacts with his boys, and all those little moments that happen in between the posed photographs are what make the images meaningful.

Why I Loved This Idaho Family Photography Session

The family was simply perfect for the shoot. They were relaxed, connected, and willing to enjoy the experience. That makes such a difference when photographing families.

Beautiful photographs don’t always come from perfectly posed moments. Sometimes the best images happen when everyone forgets about the camera for a minute.

A little walking. A little laughing.A little cuddling. A little exploring. And suddenly you have an image that feels like them.

That is what I loved about this mountain family photography session in Idaho. The scenery was incredible, but the connection within the family was what really made the photographs come alive.

More Than Just a Photography Trip

One of the things I enjoyed most about this trip was getting to experience more than just the photography.

I got to explore Boise, learn a little local history, eat some amazing food, spend time with other photographers, breathe in some seriously fresh mountain air, and photograph a beautiful family in a completely different environment.

We even had the opportunity to explore the botanical garden, which gave us another beautiful place to experience the area and learn more about the local history. Trips like this remind me why I love photography so much.

Photography gives me an excuse to travel. It gives me a reason to slow down and notice beautiful places. It allows me to meet people I might never have crossed paths with otherwise. And sometimes it takes me somewhere completely unexpected.

Would I Go Back to Idaho?

Absolutely. Idaho is beautiful. The mountains, the trees, the fresh air, the trails, the light… I could definitely see why families would choose a setting like this for their family photographs. There is something incredibly special about taking family photos somewhere that feels like an adventure.

Instead of simply showing up, standing in one spot, smiling at the camera, and leaving, a mountain family session can feel like an experience. You get to walk. Explore. Laugh. Snuggle. Take in the view.

And create photographs that remind you of more than what everyone looked like that day. They remind you of what it felt like to be together.
